E. Overview
Dr. Wynder's organization is of a very unstable formulative nature. The
USDA and private fund raising are the mechanism of support. Dr. Hoffman's tobacco-
related studies are the primary scientific program. The original Executive Director,
John David Griffin, has left, apparently not replaced. Dr. Edward Ahrens of
Rockefeller University is no longer listed on the Scientific Consulting Board. The
extramural preventive medicine program is still only by colleague association and
proposal. There is no clinic.
The prime administrator and public relations officer is Mrs. Dinah Groves,
a statuesque British-born blonde who also serves as receptionist. Mrs. Groves'
statement of "a staff of fifty, thirty of which are scientific," and "which will
double by December 1971" is not supported. Apparently there are six to eight senior
scientists and an unknown number of technicians. The "staff" thus included associateE
at other institutions often far removed from New York.
