!r UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SERVICE PLANT SCIENCE RESEARCH DIVISION BELTSVILLE, MARYLAND 20705 May 28, 1971 Mr. John Crishur 110 E. 59th Street - 10th Floor New York, New York 10022 Dear Mr. Crishur: This is in reply to your telephone conversation of this date with Dr. W. C. Shaw of this Division. Currently, we have two contracts in effect with the American Health Foundation. These are Contract No. 12-14-100-10283(34) which will terminate February 12, 1972, and Contract No. 12-14-100-10295(34) which has recently been amended to extend the termination date to February 17, 1973. The objectives of both contracts are to determine the physical properties of experimental cigarettes and chemical composition of smoke, including weight, static burning rate, pressure drop of the cigarettes, total particulate matter, nicotine, acetaldehyde, acrolein, formic acid, phenol, HCN, pyrene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, and chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides or pyrolytic products in smoke. Fatty acids, esters, hentriacontane and total paraffin content in leaf and in smoke will also be determined. The first contract (10283) includes 32 experimental cigarette samples made from tobacco of 4 varieties each with 8 stalk positions. The second contract (10295) includes 21 experimental cigarette samples made from tobacco of various types, alkaloid levels, nitrogen levels, treated with different agricultural chemicals or different postharvest methods. The amendment to this contract includes 6 tobacco samples prepared by different curing or freeze drying processes. Grant 12-14-100-10238(38) about which you inquired must be a misnomer. There are no grants with ARS that have the suffix (38). We hope this information will meet your needs. Sincerely, ,e- e. R .. E . Co leman Acting Chief, Tobacco and Sugar Crops Research Branch
