L-dopa goes into national distribution L-dopa the antiparkinson agent, went into national distribution last week when Roche Labs announced that it harl stockpiled enough of it~, Larcidrrpa to make it available for general prescription use throughout the 1-. ti. 11eanm•hile, Eaton Labs said it will start general distribution of its I.-drrpa prodtut, D>par, on or ahmut September 1 5 . t ntil nuw, the t-wo companies made the drug available only to hos- pitals and nursing honies where L-dopa had been administered on a test basis before approval to mar- ket the drug was given to the firms by the Forui and Drug Administra- t1o11. The<e hospitals and nursing honles were assured a continuing supply of the drug, because once a patient i~ started on an L-dopa regi- men he must continue on it to pre- vent relapse. For this same reason, the cotn- panies had to stockpile the drug to insure adequate supplies once it went into national distribution. A spokesman for Eaton told AMExT- cn N Dx, a:ossT that a pharmacist will still not be able to order a "w•hole backrocm full" of L-dopa. "Our first obligation," he said, "is to the patients already on the drug." Because of this, he continued, Eaton nta}• limit the quantities that an IZx- 91an can order. A Roche spr, kesman said that his company "is prepared to fill all legi- timate ordc•r~." DMSO okayed for horses The Food & I)rug Administra- tion has given Syntex clearance to market dirnethvl sulfoxide (DN1SU ) for use by veterinarians.
