Mr. George V. Allen
President and Executive Director
The Tobacco Institute, Inc.

Dear Mr. Allen:
r
EDMUND G. BROWN, Governor
This is in response to your letter of May 4 concerning the unpublished
materials which we made available to the Surgeon General's Advisory
Committee on Smoking and Health
We supplied the data from two studies which we expect to report in the
next several months. The format was specified by the Committee for
comparison of several such studies. We found that the Committee used
our data and interpreted it in strict accordance with our own under-
standing of it.
At the present time, we do not wish to give our unpublished data any
further circulation. We plan to publish in the near future our data
on the relationship of cigarette smoking, certain occupations and resi-
dence in areas with "California-type" community air pollution to mor-
tality from lung cancer and other diseases. We will be glad to bring
our reports to your attention.
Sincerely yours,
~
Lester Breslow, M.D., Chief
Division of Preventive Medical Services
