Steele Report for December 1978 STAFF : No changes° FACILITIES: A serious fire on the twelfth floor of the building where the lab is located burned out an area larger than ours. The cause is still unknown or, at least, is not being publicized. The cost is yet to be estimated. Fortunately, the fire was on the opposite side of the building~ The only effect on us was a smell of smoke and some soot carried through the ventilating ducts. ¢1 ¢J

-2- ACTIVITIES: The FTC la~oratoryls progress in the market sampl~ is @elayed again. Nicotine v~lues obtained so far are so erratic that they feel all data produced is unreli- able and a resta=t will be ~eeessary when the problem is solved. This could delay the next report till at least May. They had considered taking the first step toward the next pickup in Jsnuary, i, e. requesting current brand data from the companies. Whether or not this will heppen now is unknown; if not, perhaps they may consider skipping over the current sample and starting fresh with the next.
