z THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY 1~30 YORK AVENUE NEW YOI<K, NEW YORK 10021 OFF CE OF THE PRESIDENT 6 March 1980 Mr. Ernst Pepples Vlce President and General Counsel BroWn & Willlamson Tobacco Corporation 1600 West Hill Street Louisville, Kentucky 40232 Dear Ernie: / Please forgive my delay in writing formally to thank you aqain for arranging with Mr. Shinn to visit the campus with Jack Roemer on January 3, joining L~s for lunch and visits both to O~L~ Hospital and to Dr. Zin- der's laboratory. Dr. Lederberg sincerely regretted that he was not able to return from the West Coast prior to yonr visit then, and so he was de- lighted that he could meet you on Februaxy 6. I hope that during these recent meetings we have conveyed ~n overall perspective on the missions that the University--earlier the Rockefeller Institute--continues to fulfill in the development of blomedical research in the U.S. AS you clearly had reviewed the historical background, per- haps our discussions were useful mainly in highlighting Our current ac- tivities and plans. In any case, now that B&W is a major partner in our work--and many thanks again for so quickly arranging the generous grant ~f $90,000--we look forward to fre~ent exchanges on many subjects of mutual interest. • ~%other reason for my writing now is to sun~marize (for the record, as yo~ suggested) the topics we covered and the individuals you met on January 3. W8 were especially pleased that you were able to visit the hospital and meet with Attallah Kappas, our Physician-in-chief, to review the range of clinical investiqators. Norton Zinder, head of the Labora- tory of M~leculax Genetics, discussed how the field of molecular genetics was, in a sense, "invented" at The Rockefeller through the pioneering in- vestigations of Drs. Avery, MacLeod and McCarty. As you recall, the his- toric paper published ~ 1944 by this trio encapsulated perhaps the most revolutionary biological discovery of ~his century, that DNA is the mate- rial transmitting hereditary ~uformation. Dr. Zinder was joined by his collea~es, Drs. Elizabeth Dickson, Michael Young, Enzo Enea and Hugh Robertsont who reviewed briefly their research*
