Americans nited For A Smoke I ee Society
"The new spirited grassroots effort to make America smoke free"
2550 M Street, N.W., Suite 325, Washington, D~C.-20037, (202) NO-SMOKE
Dear Friend:
Do headlines like "YOUTH, 16, SMOKER, DIES OF
MOUTH CANCER" and "MOTHER SMOKED, NEWBORN BABY HAS
NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS" shock you?
They should. They're tragically true.
/
Despite these and other shocking facts that show a
thirty year old who smokes a pack a day is throwing away
6 - 8 years~f his life, there are still 51 million
smokers in this country.
Many of them don't know the dangers of smoking let
alone the fact'that many health hazards can be reversed
if they quit.
And the saddest thing of all is that half of these
smokers are teenagers who are committing slow motion
suicide. One of these victims may even be your own child
or a friend who smokes.
Ask yourself: "How long can I sit back and let this
lack of awareness ~o on?"
You can do several things right now.
First, take three minutes to fill out and mail the
specially numbered survey back to me. I'm sending this
survey only to responsible parents and concerned citizens
like you who I think are representative of others living
in your area and are most likely to help.
So even if you are undecided about the survey questions, -~
........ , ~- __please fill it out and return it to me in the postage paid ~i
~-r~-, envelope. Your survey will be put to work the moment it
arrives to help determine the priorities of the brand new
• °rganizati°n I'm anxious to tell you about.
As you can see from this letter, I've taken myself out ~j~
of the Hollywood scene long enough to join forces with
several well-respected physicians including Dr. Art Ulene
and put the spotlight on the hazards of smoking instead. ~I
Our sole ~urpose is to make America smoke-free and I'm
countin~ on y0u to help get this group we call Americans--
United for a Smoke Free Society off the ground by lending your

financial support.
Even our telephone number (202) NO SMOKE shows we mean
business.
Oh, you may be saying '~If someone wants to smoke and likes
it, there's not too much you can do to change that." But what
about the children, the teenagers who are still intrigued by it
and pressured into it by their peers? These are the ones I see
as being our first target audience. Don't you agree we must get
to them before they start?
Current federal, state and private initiatives haven't been
enough to get the right message to them.
In fact, I have a feeling that up until now, you haven't even
thought much about smoking hazards. Many I talk with tell me they
consider the case closed. A dead issue, they say.
Well, "taunting death" is more like it.
Those are the stirring words Yul Brynner used in his recent
national TV interview on "60 Minutes" and they tell his story
much better than I.
When asked if smoking five packs of cigarettes a day brought
him to near death from lung cancer, he replied, "That's really
what I'm convinced did it to me; because otherwise, I was an
enormously healthy and -- very strong man.
It's suicide, no question about it.
taunting death."
It is taunting --
Yul Brynner was fortunate because he recognized the cause
and along with courage and determination won his battle. He's
living proof that a strong educational program like AUSFS's can
really work.
I've seen too many other colleagues suffer and die
simply because they didn't know or didn't listen when told the
real hazards of cigarette smoking. I'm talking about well known
actors like Steve McQueen and John Wayne.
In fact, many of my friends have no idea that smoking is
linked to heart disease, bladder cancer or a half dozen other
complications that smoking leads to.
That's the message we must get out all across this country
so every American from 9 to 90 is aware of the consequences.
And I honestly feel that Americans United For A Smoke Free
Society is the grassroots organization to do it.
And what better time to start than now.
Just because the Surgeon General issued initial health

warnings back in 1964 and the percentage of a-pack-a-day smokers
in this country dropped from 42% to" 30% doesn't mean the war is
over.
On the contrary, the battle has just begun.
Yes, thirty million smokers have kicked their habit in the
last two decades, but over fifty million still hgve it.
Let's face it. We're not just talking about our own health
here. We're talking about the health of the entire nation. That
may sound overstated, but unfortunately it is not.
With your support, here's the role I see Americans United for
a Smoke Free Society playing, starting today.
The national clearing house for information on the hazards of
smoking. Create, produce and distribute literature for mass
distribution.
Educate the youth of dangers of smoking through student
awareness programs enlisting support of notables including
sports figures and actors whom children can identify with
to serve as role models.
Produce national TV spots and radio ads to increase public
awareness of smoking's hazards.
Operate a nationally coordinated speakers bureau of physicians
and notables committed to working in our all-out awareness
program.
A spirited grassroots campaign at the state and local levels to
obtain enactment of ordinances and laws that"
Prohibit smoking in all public places.
Restrict the purchase and use of tobacco products to persons
21 years of age and older.
Obtain the passage of legislation to subsidize Stop-Smoking
programs including tax-incentives for persons who enroll.
A national research forum to develop and analyze methods that
reduce dependency on nicotine.
Fund research into all aspects of tobacco dependency.
You can help us reach the American people with our message by
doing these three things through Americans United for a Smoke Free
Society today.
•

survey to us. $25 will send letters to I00 homes. If
you can send $50 we will be able to reach into 200 mailboxes
and $I00 gets our message to 400 families.
°,
Perhaps you're thinking, my survey or my $20 or $25 donation
can't be very important toward an immediate goal of $S7,500
to inform 150,000 homes. The truth is, just how many people
we can reach with our appeal and how successful we are
depends on your answer to this letter. And it really hurts
when one person like you who we're counting on decides not
to help.
3.Send us the names and addresses of friends who will also help.
After you've completed your survey and written your <ax-
deductible check made payable to Americans United for a Smoke
Free Society, turn the survey over and list those you feel
will want to help us, too. We have so very little to start
with right now, so please send us only the names and
addresses of those you think will care about our efforts and
feel as you and I do. We won't use your name when we write
them.
The dollars you send now to AUSFS will go further and be put to
better use than any other dollars you'll ever spend. And the few
minutes you spend filling out your survey will be among your most
productive.
Maybe you've been lucky so far. Maybe the consequences from
deadly smoking hazards haven't touched you or those close to you.
But when you stop to think about it, the health and well-being
of your family and your friends is at stake here and your most
generous contribution of $i00, $50, S25 or just $20 can be your most
important investment ever.
Please let me hear from you right away.
,~<~- Sincerely,
/~ony
~hairman
Americans United for a Smoke Free
Society.
P.S. Remember, your survey is registered under your name and even
if for some reason you don't wish to answer, I must have yours
back to get accurate results. Please consider the ways you
can help keep our vital information about smoking hazards going
out. I am counting on your answer to this letter and your survey ~.~
to head us in the right direction. Thank you very much. ~
