Blum, Alan From: Sent: To: Subject: Blum, Alan Tuesday, January 21, 2003 10:34 AM 'Scott Tomar' FW: Smokeless tobacco Hi, Scott. The piece appeared Sunday, and it looked good and read well. I'll send you an original newsprint copy. I have a feeling this isn't the last we've heard from Rodu and Cole in The Birmingham News, so I'll keep my ear to the ground. It's good that we left out a few of the points we also could have made (eg, all about ACSH; the ethics of the Institutional Review Board's approving Rodu's studies, if they ever did; the fact that the product differs in the US from the Swedish one; and possibly even the question of whether UAB is now opening itself up to liability by endorsing Rodu's and Cole's harm reduction strategies and pitching their propaganda), since we may need to make them in a follow-up letter or other commentary. I'll forward all emails I receive. Please send me your best mailing address so I can get this out to you today or tomorrow. Again, I am in awe of your ability to pull together such a strong, well-reasoned essay with so little notice. Now let's talk about a similar piece for a medical readership: Today The Birmingham News, tomorrow The Lancet! Alan ..... Original Message ..... From: Martha Dawson [mailto:marthadawsonl@msn.com] Sent: Monday, January 20, 2003 4:54 PM To: Blum, Alan Subject: Smokeless tobacco Dear Drs. Tomar and Blum, I appreciated your informative and concerned atricle in yesterday's Birmingham News. I'am certain that you read Radu's response to Rick Riley's editorial in Sports Illustrated. We health professionals should all be concerned over our nation's poor health status. The health reports for our fellow Alabamians is especially low and tobacco use is a significant factor. The encouragement of any tobacco usage, including smokeless, is dangerous. One certainly has to look at the financial gain by Rodu and Cole as an plausable explation for their deceptive reports. I was encoraged by your article. Please keep up the good work.
