Nicotine Research - Nicotine RSM - Puff Profile Analysls
Status: Work continued on calculating additional puffing behavior "
parametere from WAVES I and II of the Nicotine RSM Study. The
new parameters will be used to augment s~w~ary date calculated at
the time of smoklngs. The addltlonal parameters include puff
work and power along with several indicators of puff shape. It "
was also suggested at last week'~.Nicotlne RSM meeting that
wlthln-clgarette puff variance be analyzed as a measure of
'*smoking comfort".
Significance: Additional puffing parameters are being evaluated
in order to better describe smoking behavior differences between
clusters.
Next Steps: Recalculated data will be placed in a VAX account
early next week for future analysls.

Nicotine Research - Nicotine RSM - Smoking Replications
Status: All of the WAVE I Full Flavor files selected for
replication have been retrieved, placed on disks and reviewed. A
number of the files will require some editing to remove noise and
minor artifacts.
Significance: The Analytical Chemistry Division will begin
replicatlon of the Full Flavor smoklngs soon. Currently they are
repllcating several "cleanup" files .from the FFLT group.
Next Steps: Two disks (40 smokings) are ready now. The
remainder will be completed next week.

Nicotine Research - Nicotine RSM - Blood Nicotine Study
Status~'~stlng o£ Wave I FF smokers began
subjects (12 from each of the 4 smoker "clusters") were scheduled
for testing. At the end of the past week, 41 subjects had been
successfully tested. Of the 48 subjects scheduled, 4 did not
appear for testing and 3 were not completed for technloal
reasons. The subjects remaining are distrlbutod among the 4
clusters as follows: Cluster
7; Cluster 4 - 12. A total of 135 blood samples were analyzed
last week for nicotine by RIA.
Significance: The Nicotine RSM Study is an integrated effort to
determine the roles played by 'tar
consumer acceptance of a product. The blood nicotine study may
provide llnks among smoker acceptance, smoking behaviors,
physlologlcal responses, and changes in blood nicotine during
smoking.
Next Steps: Subject testing is Scheduled through 9/27/91.

Nicotine Research - Nicotine RSM - Reports and Documentation
Status: Deborah Kay, Walter Pritchard, Tom Perfettl, Pat
Vestal, Harvey Gordln, Barry Fagg and Regina Brim continued to
draft a chapter of the Nicotine RSM manuscript tltled "Product
Preparation and Characterization". This past week, Deborah Kay
compiled and reviewed the various authors' comments.
Also this past week, Dr. Deborah Kay discussed the manuscript
project with Chuck B11xt and gave him an outllne for the
manuscript.
Significance: Documentation of the Nicotine RSM will assure
that the large data base from the study is applled to the
Company's strategic directions.
Next Steps: Regina Brim will incorporate the comments into a
revised draft and distribute it to the authors.

Psychophysiology of Smoking
Status~ £.first draft of the manuscript "Caffeine and smoking~
Subjective, performance, and psychophysiol0gical effects" was
completed. The draft was distributed by first author Wally
Pritchard to co-authors John Robinson, Don deBethizy, and Riley
Davis for feedback. Work began on a poster titled "Effect of
smoking and caffeine on EEG, heart rate, performance, and
anxlety/mental alertness/muscular tension" by the same four
authors.
These reports summarize a study that measured EEG, heart rate,
performance, subjective ratings of feeling states, smoking and
breathing behavior and blood levels of nlcotln~, cotinlne, and
caffeine. Subjects completed two sessions; one in which they
consumed decaffelnated coffee, and another in which caffelnated
coffee was drunk.
Slgniflcance~ An inverse relation'between activity lh--the "fast"
beta2 EEG frequency band and anxiety was found in those subjects
who had high levels of trait anxiety and who had higher increases
in blood nicotine on smoking. This confirmed our earller
findings.
Next Steps: The poster and manuscript will be submitted to the
PPRC. The poster is intended for the annual convention of the
Society for Psychophysiologlcal Research. The manuscript is
slated to be submitted to Psychopharmacology.

Basic Sensory Research
Status: In two unilaterally trigeminectomized (right side lesion)
subjects, psychophysical and respiratory responses to propionlc
acid (presented to only the nostrll on the unlesioned side) were
recorded.
significance~ Unilaterally trlgeminectomlzed subjects provide a
unique opportunity to advance understanding of odor and
irritation. Results from the normal and lesloned sides will tell
what role the trigeminal nerve plays in responses to "real world"
levels of chemicals in the environment. Addltionally these
results help clarify interpretation of our earller research on
normal and anosmlc humans.
Next Steps: Testing of both subjects will be completed in
October '91.

Nicotine Research - New HNSH
Status: The mechanical prototype has been disassembled by PT&D.
The basel~ate has been inspected by Hr. Edwards and compared to a
completed module. It appears that very little work will be
required by the machine shop to update the baseplate. With
minor exceptions, most of the mechanical parts to make a complete
module are available. Themachtne shop has received the
baseplate (and one of the Btobehavtoral modules for comparison).
significance: Updating the prototype will make available the
mechanical portion of a two port module quickly. This module
will probably be provided to New Product Development.
Next Steps: Once the machine shgp has completed the baseplate,
PT&D will reassemble the mechani~bl portion of the machine. A
determination of the necessary additional parts will be made.

Nicotine Research - Four-Cltles Study
Status: A meeting of persons who took part In the study was
held on September 12th. The status of the R&DM was reviewed and
the various data sets were discussed. Participants at the
meeting agreed to assist in analysis and documentation of the
results.
Significance: The Four-City Study obtained information on the
personalities, smoking behaviors, and concepts of the "Ideal"
cigarette for various clusters of full flavor non-menthol
smokers. The design variables in the study were cigarette blend
nicotine and draft.
Documentation is needed to maximize accesslbility and use of this
information.
Next Steps: The group will continue to review and document
results from the study.

Miscellaneous -
John Robinson attended the American Society of Addiction
Medicine's (ASAM) 4th Annual Conference on Nicotine Dependence In
Raleigh on 9/13 - 9/15. The conference was primarily held for

physicians and professionals intereeted in smoking cessation
programs. The presentations were extremely general and
specifica~ly directed at: nicotine addiction. In reality, it was
a tobacco bashing gathering of hard-core, anti-tobacco
professionals. A trip report will be prepared.

Cindy Lyman demonstrated outstanding support of the United Way
campaign by negotiating a 20% price discount on new books from
Scrlbner's and then initiating efforts to collect money that
eventually bought 29 books. Fourteen persons in the
Biobehavloral and ETS Division contributed. Cindy received the
CAT (Caught Acting Terrific) award. Also Regina Brim and Mitch
Stiles assisted in the United Way Campaign for R&D by decorating
the seminar room, greeting persons at the door, and handing out
cards to prospective donors.
