Memorandum for
Re'e~rd
August 10, 1987
Subject:
Meetings w/Dr. Gerald Wogan (HIT) and Dr. John
Weisburger (American Health Foundation);
August 6, 1987
- Arrived at HIT around 9:OOam for meeting with Dr.Wogan.
- Told him we were there to discuss a revolutionary cigarette
product with him and to obtain his services to perform an
independent, objective assessment of the fox studies performed on
the product.
- Ne then reviewed the need for. secrecy, and stressed that were
we to proceed with him, he should not trade in RJRN stock until
we announce the product to the general public.
- We told him we would stop the presentation any time he feZt
uncomfortable and did not want to proceed fuE~her.
- The product construction was then explained to him - component
by component - composition and function.
- He was shown a product.
- tle was also shown a picture of Cambridge pads -
- Wally Hayes then presented our tox data.
FF to Alpha.
- Jerry Wogan was obviously surprised and impressed with the
product.
- He feels that elgarette smoking is harmful and agreed that such
a product would perform a publlo good.
- His biggest concern expressed to us was the CO content of the
product.
- He was anxious to know what we know about the toxicity o£
nicotine.
- He also made several helpful suggestions about further tests
and/or analyses that could be made. • . .:, "
- He obviously was interested in working'with us, and getting
clear what was expected of'him (independent) and asked about
timing.
- I -

o He felt compelled to spend a few days thinking about his
present time commitments and whether he could spend the time to
work with RJR.
- I believe he will ,~oin us and if he doesn't, it will truly be
because his present commitments wlll not permlt him to do an
adequate Job.
. Left Dr. ~ogan's o~tce aC 10:30 am.
Arrived Dr. John Weisburger's home at 2:00 pro.
- (See comments above).
. Johnny made clear that he has relinquished his position as Vice
President of Research atthe American Health Foundation. -Be is
still employed as a researcher 805 of his time,
- He has t~_me for consulting but is going to be choosy about his
consulting assignments.
-He has always worked with improving public health and would not
accept any consultancy that didn't lead toward that end.
- Johnny was very impressed by the product and congratulated RJR,
Wally and me several times for the work accomplished,
-He saw immediately the impact the product would have on public
health. He strongly believes that cigarettes cause many, many
preventive, deaths around the world o
- He was concerned about the CO levels,
-He made several suggestions re fox work that could be
accomplished to enhance our data to lnolude a CO carcinogenic
study (not promotion) using forbal esters.
-He made clear how much of a role Ernest Wynder has played in
producing safer cigarettes (fllter- Eastman and Celanese).
-He thought Wynder would like the product and suggested we vtslt
with him.
- We think this would be appropriate after Johnny has had time to
see the data in detail and we think we can get hlm to set an
appointment and Join us for meeting with Wynder.
- He hinted that tobacco money has paid for lots of bricks in
their current research facility and that Wynder is friendly with
PH executives.
-2-

- He also felt that thls wouldbe a ohanoe for tobaooo money to
pay for more bricks - an expansion - $q-5 million (-$1 million
RJRN lab).
- He recommended we Got see Hoffmann now.
- Very glad to work with us.
