Salvaggio and Lehrer into the issue of tobacco smoke and allergy for the past five years. During the past year Drs. Salvaggio and Lehrer completed their animal work and began human studies to investigate the effects, if any, of certain tobacco and tobacco smoke extracts in people who claim to be sensitive to smoke. In the preliminary clinical trials which they conducted they found little, if any, effect from tobacco smoke extracts. This would suggest the absence of human allergens in tobacco smoke. Drs. Salvaggio and Lehrer wish to continue and expand their clinical trials and to conduct further investi- gation into the chemical nature of tobacco smoke. They have

submitted a proposal requesting funding for this research in th'e amount.of $122,664.00 for two years -- $58,055.00 for the f~.rst year and $64,609°00 for the second year.
