Re: L. G. S. Ran
By way of supplement to previous information concerning
Dro Ran, Dave Hardy has requested that I send y0a the enclosed
material: Reprint from The Lancet, August 29, 1970; reprint from
the British Medical Journal, December 4, 1971; article from The
Guardian,.January 29, 1972; March i0, 1972, Medical World New--6--
article; undated column by Lou Kemp; and curriculum vitae.
Dr. Ran is presently senior biochemist at the Glasgow
and West of Scotland Regional Steroid Laboratory at the Royal
Infirmary. His request for research funds amounting to about
$i0,000 the first year and similar amounts in each of two suc-
ceeding years received a strong endorsement from Ed Jacob, Dave
Hardy and me because of the potential value of Rao's belief that
lung cancer may well be an endocrine disease. He submitted an
application to the CTR for a grant-in-aid to do blood steroid
level research that would determine whether or not such work
correlated with his earlier observations as to levels in urine.
The SAB has disapproved Rao's relatively modest proposal, but
Dr. SonLmers believes that Rao's basic approach is worthy for
consideration as a special project.

Ed Jacob has met Dr. Rao and reports that he "is
a personable, obviously highly intelligent and articulate
scientist."
Dave has talked with several of you concerning this
project and it is our understanding that support approval has
been given by Brown & Williamson, Lorillard, Philip Morris and
R. J. Reynq%ds. Dave may have also talked with Cy Hetsko and
Fred'Haas ~'the time you get this letter. In any event, if you
have any further questions with regard to Rao's theory that
steroid ab~6rmalities may be "predictors" of lung cancer, we
will be gla~ to try and answer them.
Best personal regards.
Sincerely,
William W. Shinn
