LAW OFFICES SHOOK. HARDY ~. BACON 915 GR~.ND AVENUE KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI 6410~ (816) 474-6550 January 23, 1976 Thomas F. Ahrensfeld, Esq. DeBaun Bryant, Esq. Cyril F. Hetsko, Esq. Henry C. Roemer, Esq. Arthur J. Stevens, Esq. Please find enclosed a copy of the Vita of Dr. Ingram Olkin, chairman of the Department of Statistics at Stanford Uni- versity. I met with Dr. Olkin and Dr. ~larvin Kastenbaum on December 17, 1975, at which time we discussed Dr. Olkin's interest in multivariate analysis statistical models. Dr. Olkin is well qualified and is very articulate. I learned, in visiting with Dr. Olkin, that he woul~ like to examine the theoretical structure of the "multivariate logistic risk function." This particular statistical technique has been employed in the analysis of the Framingham study of heart disease and is the basis of the federal government's multi-million dollar MR.FIT program ("Multifactorial Risk Factor Intervention Trial"). In spite of the fact that it has been used extensively to analyze epidemiological data, the technique has not been subjected to an in-depth analysis by theoretical statisticians. Nor has it had the proper peer review in the literature of professional statisticians. We believe that a modest effort now may stimulate a broader in- terest in such questions especially among theoretical statisticians at Stanford and elsewhere. A copy of Dr. Olkin's proposal, "A Study of the Models Used in the Analysis of Certain Medical Data" is enclosed. He is asking for two years of support at the rate of $6,000 per year. Dr. Gardner has reviewed and approved the proposal.
