I have discussed with Paul Sticht Joshua Lederberg's letter ~"
requesting renewal of our lupport. I recommend, and Paul
concurs, that in accordanc with our current practice we renew
the grant for one year at he same' rate as at present ($550,000
per year) with intent to r~.~new for up to two additional years.
Rockefeller Univers:Lty represents the flagship of our
program of support for fun, lamental biomedical research. As such,
we believe long-term commi';ment to be in our best interest. We
further believe that we ought to let our contribution go in the
manner requested by Dr. Le,~erberg. The flexibility he seeks
represents one of the true values that can be attached to our
gift.
If' you also concur, ge would recommend that the Committee
be asked to approve this r :newal at its November meeting,
subject, of course, to full Board approval as part of the budget
process in December.
