R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company Winston-Salem, N.C. 27102 n nl April 18, 1979 Dr. Herbert R. Bentley IMPERIAL TOBACCO LTD. Lombard Street Bristol BS99 7JR England Dear Herb: Thank you very much for your letter of April 9th. I have the following comnents: Re~arding point I. of your letter "ICOSI sampling device", the attached material sent to Karl ~eloh is self explanatory. Regarding point 2., I am not planning to bring Bill Clapp nor any other expert with me. r will, however, talk to Bill Clapp before leaving, to report on our work - if any - beyond what is in the attached memorandum to Karl ~4eloh. Regarding ~รท 3. ! accu.-pe that one or ~o copies of ~.~ report be available for the discussion. I would find it rather cumbersome to take a copy of this rather large voltrne with me on my trip. Regarding point 4., I assume that the report has been published and/ or does not vary from the confidential pre-publication version you so kindly sent to me a few months ago. If there has been a change I ~ould appreciate being advised well ahead of my .coming to Brussels. Regarding points not on the agenda, it is my information that one of our chief duties will be to advise the Executive Conmittee on what, in our judgment, are the issues of the future for the Industry, with reference to smoking and health, and particularly issues which are likely to receive attention in the media and/or by governmental authorities. If my information is correct, it might be desirable to advise all members of our Group, so they can think about this ahead of time and come suitably prepared. You may also find it expeditious to suggest a fe~ topics. Further on points not on the agenda, I have been informed that our Group has been requested to cooperate with SAWP, and that its chairman (or his designee) will be in Brussels to attend our next meeting. If this information is correct, it would also, in my judgment, be advisable that the menders of our Group be so informed before coming. I also assure that you will inform the other members of our Group regarding my comnents, and I would also appreciate it very much if you e~uld please let me have any other comnents you may receive. Regarding time for the meeting, I leave it to your good Jucl~nent whether one and a half days are sufficient. This may, of course, be affected by the points raised in this letter, and by conments which may or may not be made by the others, as well as any contrl- butions or presentations which n~%y or may not be made by the SAWP representative.
