Attached p].emse find the '~'fJ_na]" program of the 'dth
World Conference
on &%nking and Health'. 3his copy of the program has allegedly
been com-
piled fr~n the galley i~roofs of the ol'Iglnal progr~n. It is
elea~ fr~n that
progrs~n that the Stockholm gathering will be by and large a
"Carrie Nation"
meeting. What "scientiffic" contributions are plmmed, are
n~st]y revie~vs
of previously published data. "Significm]t" n~v scientJ fie
information can
be expc~ted to be nil or ndnin~%l.
~nei:e will be ap])arently le~s a~ tention paid to underdeveloped cou~tr~e~
than had allegedly oriF.ina]ly been planned. This confirn~ some recent infor-
mation that the organizers of the meeting have had some diffleu].ties in 0b-
raining cooperation f]x)m these countries.
It is my understandir~g that the RJR position, ~s well as the official
~OOSI posit~on, is that of "lowest possible profile" at the meeting. There
is no question ~n my mind that ~[r. l,'Jnnegan, Don lloel, Dr. Nenk~us anG Dr.
Nystrom are in c~plete agreement with this and will observe this. However,
on the other hand, it is, of course, impossible to foretell whether others
fr~n the U.S. which will. be present in Stoc~d~olm on behalf of the Industry,
or Industry representatives from Europe, etc., will ac~ere to this.
If, in spite of the Industry exDgert~se assembled in Stockholm, ~nfor-
marion on ~D]dng. and health or related questions should be needed, I agreed
to serve ~s "anchor n~n'[ on a 24 hour stand-by basis, to furnis~h-such infor-
mation as accurately as possible in the min]rm~n turn-around-t2~ne. ~lessrs.
Crohn, Jacob and Iloel have been appraised of this.
