Re: Invalidation of Some Reports in the Research Department
lye do not foresee any difficulty in the event a decision is reached
to remove certain reports from Re~earch files. Once it becomes clenr
that such action is necessary for the successful defense of our present
and future suits, we will promptly remove all such reports from our files~
As a rule, we invalidate about 15 reports each year for various
reasons. The most common reasons for inv~lldating a report and/or
requiring rewriting are:
(I) discoveries of inaccuracies in data,
(2) erroneous interpretation of data,
(3) purposeless speculation on data,

(11) need]_ess rep~wvs of previously reported data and/or dlscussions~
(5) undue delays in finalizing reports,
(6) confidentiality of contents, and
(7) sever~l miscellaneous reasons.
As to the reports which you are recommending to be invalidated, we
can cite misinterpretation of data as reason for invalidation. A further
reason is that many of these are needless repetitions and are being
removed to alleviate overcrowding of our files.
As an alternative to invalidation, we can have the authors rewrite
those sections of the reports which appear objectionable.
We are awaiting a decision as to the action to be taken with respect
to the reports in question.
