On behalf of the tobacco industry, the Company worked on developing
a standard smoking machine designed to be u~ed by independent scientists
engaged in experiments in which cigarette smoking is inhaled by animals
and as a result some animal experiments were conducted.

Earlier the Company had not been able to duplicate: ,some of the animal
experiments reported by others. The Company concluded as a result of
evaluating these items that it was not practicable for the Corn.party to
carry out animal studies independent of the Council for Tobacco Research
Activities. For this re~son the Company continues to support the TCR and
the AMA Research Programs.
