Dear" Blucker:
l~m afraid we have some serious problems facing us i** the
n~t session of the ConnecticuE General Assembly (See clipping)
.-.-
what wiEh tl,e avowed declaration of war against smoking b/. Scott
HcAl!~er., chairman ~ the Hartford Board of ~ucation.
H~lister attributes his lung cancer to being a four-pack-a-day
smoker. ~l,at ever happened to ~ao(leration~)e*
He apparenEly wants a complege aboli~lon of smoking in public
places in Connecticut. (As you know, in nearby Windsor, a councilman
wants to abolish smoking entirely, and, of course, ~he chairman of the
Ass~ibly's Public Heal~h and Safety Conm~ittee, Dr. Morris Cohen, a
re~ired Bloomfield dentist, is also a former lung cancer patient .
Cohen once told me.privately ne smoked moderatel~ years' ago--long
before he was a lung cancer victim, I bei~eve...and I've since heard
his sister--a non-smoker--had a malignancy, also (although l'm not
certain of this and will check it Out).
McAllscer Is a 'pr' type and was recently promoted to ~eeut~ve vice
_Rreside~ of the Alsop-f~,ily controlledJ{~rtford Fire Ins. Company
(John Alsop,Rep.National Chmn, from Co~m.,is c~n of the company and
he is, of course, brother of Joseph Alsop and the late columnist Stewart
Alsop) He also Is apparently close ~o U.S.Sen. ~well Weicker (R-Corm.)
Complicating our problem in Conn., also, is Herb Brucker, for~r editor
of the Hfdt.Comrant, and now a syndicated col~nlst, who is also anti-
smoking (and vociferous abou~ it) again as a result of a bout wi~h cancer.
I don't know how widely Brucker is syndicated, but he has ¢onslderable
influence in Hfdt.,where his col~n appears about three times a week.
Cordially
