Mr. Charles Tucker Larry P,
ewley
Today I tallied %~ith ~:~x Crohn regarding RJRT assisting Naegele
Outdoor Advertising with a lawsuit against the City of Wilson,
~orth Carolina.
In 1972 the Wilson City Council adopted an ordinance prohibiting
the construction of new outdoor advertising (off-premlse)
structures throughout the city's zoning jurisdiction and
requiring the removal of existing off-premlse units within
sixty (60) ~onths of the adoption of the ordinance.
On April 4, 1977, Naegele Outdoor Advertising obtained a
preliminary injunction, which is presently in effect. The
case is now scheduled to be heard early in June.
With Wilson being thecenter of the tobacco industry, they
felt their case %~ould be strengthened to have a tobacco
manufacturer testify in defense of their media of communication.
Richard Dilworth has asked that we help anyway we can and Max
Crohn agrees we should look into this matter. There is some
fear that ~llson could Join the small number of North Carolina
cities that have totally prohibited off-premlse outdoor
advertising.
At this point Max will call Mr. ArmlsteadMaupln, the Attorney
repre~entlng Naegele OUtdoor Advertising to discuss this case
further.
If you have any questions, please let me P~ow.
