Abstract

Refers to telex that suggests immediate "preparation of the scientific part of our argumentation" and suggests meeting in Stockholm. Opines opposition to "passive labels" should be based on quotations from two well known German public health experts. Reports the industry's position must be that "there is absolute [sic] no proof that passive smoking is a health hazard." Recommends attacking only the strongest statements. Indicates publication resource materials will be forwarded.

Telex to : Mr. A. Stenshamn, Advokatfirman Lagerl~f cc. : Mr. J.B. Robinson, PME EEMA Mr. F.H. Dulles, PME EEMA Mr. J.-E. Gr~nlund, PM Sweden From: H.W. Gaisch 10.04.1985 Your reference number : 1130 I am referring to your telex reply of today in which you suggest to start a.s.a.p, with the preparation of the scientific part of our argumentation. In this case I would propose to meet on the 25th and/or 26th April, the only dates when I could come to Stockholm. If these day are not convenient for you, we would have to meet another time in Neuchatel. However, as the drafting should be done in Swedish, Stockholm would be handier. The main arguments against the "passive smoking" labels should be based upon quotations from the proceedings of the 1984 Vienna "workshop" which are published in the journal "6ffentliches Gesundheitswesen" under the title "Passivrauchen aus medizinischer Sicht - Ergenbisse eines Expertengespr~ches". The authors of the proceedings are two well known personalities of the German public health service, Professor Gostomzyk and Professor Franck. Our thrust in the "passive smoking" area must be : there is absolute no proof that passive smoking is a health hazard. 2501000353

As far as the primary health issue is concerned, I have already sugested only to attack the more exagerated statements. I shall compile a few selected publications, on which we could base a concise document. You will receive the relevant photocopies within the next days. Kind regards and best wishes, Helmut Gaisch NNNN
