Alix Freedman inter, view of Cliff Goldsmith
Cliff Goldsmith, former presidertt of Philip Morris Incorporated (circa 1.978),
was interviewed by Alix Freedman today.. I talked with Cliff by phone for a few
minutes before the interview, and: again after.
Cliff told me he spoke with Freedman for about one and one-half hours. I did
not have a lengthy conversation with Cliff, and a more detailed debriefing is in
order. Freedman asked if Cliff knew led Jacob (no) or Len Zahn (no). She wanted to
know about lawyer involvement in both CTR and Special Projects. Cliff said he was
not sure why lawyers were involved with CTR, except he thought industry
meetings raised antitrust issues. He added that lawyers may have been involved
with Special Projects because of their interest in having certain scientific issues
researched. According to Cliff, Freedman's "pitch" seemed to be: if CTR is
independent, why were industry lawyers permitted to use CTR for special projects
which they wanted funded?
