Abstract

Encloses suggested closing paragraph for letter "in view of the testimony given in Congress last week" by more than 20 industry-sponsored investigators that "statistical evidence is ambiguous and medical evidence is lacking for the assertion that cigarette smoking is a hazard to health". Cites prominent organizations and areas of expertise of witnesses. Suggests offering "copies of these statements" to Shepley and reviewing their testimony with his editors.

"+= : You may wish to consider substituting the .~."/~!i: ~' . ~ " .~ .. for the closing paragraph of your letter, mony given in Congress last week. It is unfortunate that you~ a~¢tcle to the conclusion of the hearings before the House Interstate and Forei~ Commerce Committee. Imst week 18 doctors and statisticians testified in person before that Committee and over 20 more filed state- ments to the effect that the statistical evidence is ambiguous and medical evidence lacking for the assertion that cigarette smoking is a hazard to health. These witnesses included medical researchers, professors of medicine, pathology and statistics and present and former presidents of such professional organizations as the College of American Pathologists, The American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the American Medical Women's Association. Their testi- mony is strong evidence that the real issue in this c~troversy continues to be whether there is Justification for the claim that cigarette smokin~ ~;~--::= endangers health. the s~a~emea~s o~ those au~o~f~tes should be called to the attention of your editors. I would llke to review the testimony wlth them and p~ovlde them wlth.~:~ copies of these statements.
