Abstract
Documents meeting discussion regarding direction and long-term plans of industry health research. States "CTR has helped in legal situations and as public statements - provision of witness." Discusses that "tobacco industry should and must continue to do research" and cites need for more "independent research." Debates whether CTR should have a "basic overall goal or give more money and let little projects proliferate." Suggests a move into more bronchial and cardiovascular research. Determines role of TI. Shinn - problem with liason committee - differences in phylosophy [sic.] between the companies. - Policy committee will have to preceed [sic.] a Implementation Committee How does one handle Congressional hearings? - Pepples - Limitations when 2 or more companies collaborate. needs to offer some general principles for guide to companies for joint work. What should the mix be in various categories. What are the scientific directions want? Pepples - have another meeting including Senkus, Colby etc. Henson - come out with broad directions and then meet with the group. Hughes CTR program - what is their overall direction? - Get it more related to specific function. - Program based in history/not up to date no work on the effect. Therefore, focus program into basic overall objective or give more money and let little projects proliferates [sic.]? - Move more into bronchitic, cardiovascular etc. - What is the role of SAB - too diverse Pepples - SAB purports to measure relevance RBS - We do not know what is going on. ASpears - How does one come up with the objectives and portion out bucks. What are the needs? May need more than one organization to handle the various items which are needed.
