March i, 1972 Thomas F. Ahrensfeld, Esq. DeBaun Bryant, Esq. Frederick P. Haas, Esq. Cyril F. Hetsko, Esq. Henry C. Roemer, Esq. Arthur J. Stevensr Esq. Addison Yeaman, Esq. Senator Mar!ow Cook sent a letter on February 9 inviting Dr. Yerushalmy to react to criticisms of his w~rk contained in the annual Surgeon GeneraA's reports. We have now.received a copy of Dr. Yerusha!my's rep!y~.and, i think~ you will be extremely interested in his observations. I particularly refer you to the comments commencing with the last paragraph on page 4. While you may have i!ready received it from some other source, I also enclose a copy of a February i article from Internal Medicine News on the AAAS program held in Philadelphia during December o~ last year. The work which Dr. Theodor Sterling has been doing in connection with air pollution became unusually valuable following the President's transmission on January 3! of an air pollution message ho Congress, which you have received, that attempted to implicate cigarette smoking, in 95% of lung cancer and 90% of chronic obstructive lung disease. Dr. Sterling has consulted with us in connection with this message and has also, at Jack Mills request, tended meetings in Washington. We would like for him to have every opportunity to continue his wor~ in this area an~ he has recently submitted a request to us to help fund a
