MEMORANDUM March 26, 1975 TO : FROM : Mr. Arthur J. Stevens A. W. Spears I am returning an agenda for the Symposium on "The Chemical Requirements of the Tobacco Industry," to which you attached a note, "What is the significance of this"? This is a symposium being organized under the American Chemical Society, and covers a list of subjects. I have actually read several of the papers in draft form and find that both of t]~ose to be presented by Doct~or Tso and Doctor Hoffmann will[ disclose some of the material which I previously forwarded to you from the Tobacco Working Group. Tso's paper, particularly, takes into considera- tion the possibility that some of the leaf components correlated with biological activity in the Tobacco Working Group program are a part of a definition Of leaf quality~ and usability. Quite frankly, I doubt that this symposium will receive press coverage or much general attention by the scientifl.c community. I am also attaching, for your information, the agenda of the session at the 3rd World Conference on Smoking and Health, which will be chaired by Doctor Wynder. In the past, these session:~ have been closed to the press, with only the chairman giving a stur~mary of the session dis- cussions to the general assembly. Of course, the press will be present at the general session, and individual participants may talk to the press independently. We have discussed the subject before, and I'll keep you informed.
