P~E: Eleanor Macdonald
Gentlemen:
Eleanor J. Mac ionald, Professor Emeritus of
Epidemiology at the University of Texas System Cancer Center
(M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute) has requested
an additional year's support for her Special Project.
The past year has been a productive one for Hiss
Macdonald. Her source book entitled The E~idemiology of
Cancer: Incidence Analyzed by Type, Ethnic Grou£ an__~d Geo@r~aphi@al
Location was published by Raven Press in July, 1978. Her
second book, which like the incidence book represents the
culmination of her research partially funded by ,the industry,
is now in press. It is currently scheduled for'publication
by Academic Press sometime early this year. It is anticipated
that this second book will be well received by the scientific
com~nunity. Also in preparation is a third volume giving her
personal overview of 50 years in the field of cance~ epidemiology.
Miss Macdonald is considering a request by Raven Pr(.;s to
publish a companion bc-k to the first one that would graph
or map the incide,.ce I gures. She is a/so ,~sidering
requests to publish her data regarding meta:,Lases.

Miss Macdonald continues to be recognized as a
premier name in cancer epidemiology. For example, NCI
recently published a brochure on women scientists who have
made majoK contributions in the field of cancer; Miss Macdonald
was included. In addition, she serves as a consultant to
many groups, and she still serves as the section editor
(epidemiology) for the Yearbook of Cancer.
Both Miss Macdonald and her associate Dr. Wellington
presented papers at the XII International Cancer Congress in
Argentina in October, 1978. Their topics were "Regional
Differences in Cancer Among the Spanish-Surnamed Population
in Texas" and "Ethnic Effects'in U. S. Cancer Mortality
Models." More recently, Miss Macdonald discussed "Standards
for Epidemioiogy Research" at the ~=~kAS meeting in January,
1979.
We consider Miss Macdonald to be extremely knowledgeable
about cancer epidemiology, and we expect to consult with her
this year on a variety of matters, including the 1979 Surgeon
General's Report, and potential litigation and Hearings
material.
I have discussed Miss Macdonald's [.roject with Dr.
Hockett, who joins me in recommending that it be funded for
an additional year (March 1979 - February 1980) at the
requested level of $106,443= A copy of the proposed budget
is attached for your information.
Since Miss Macdonald's current funding will be
ending shortly, we would appreciate your early decision.
