Gentlemen:
The enclosed research proposal from Dr. William Gutstein
~edical College requests support in the amount of
two years. We recommend that the proposal be approved
a CTR Special Project.
Dr. Gutstein is Professor of Pathology and Psychiatry at
New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. He is an experienced
investigator and has published extensively in the heart disease
field. Most of his recent animal research has dealt with the ~
relationship between neural stimulation and atherogenesis. Dr. ~
Gutstein hypothesizes that responses to psychosocial conditions ~
(i.e., stress) lead eventually to coronary artery disease in
~
susceptible individuals. A succinct summary of Dr. Gutstein's ~
research hypothesis can be found on page 1 (Abstract) of the ~
proposal. Also attached is a copy of a recent study conducted by
Dr. Gutstein and colleagues that provides some of the experimental
background of the present proposal.
It is our view that Dr. Gutstein and his colleagues have
developed an important project to study objectively the question
of whether stress and other psychosocial conditions are causally
related to the occurrence of coronary artery disease. As a research
pathologist who also holds a professional appointment in psychiatry,
Dr. Gutstein seems particularly well qualified to perform the
research.

February 14, 1983.
Sincerely,
Patrick M. Sirridge
