We have now received your various communications
approving renewed Special Project funding for Dr. Hickey,
as recommended in my letter of November 7, 1973o Accord-
ingly, Dr. Hickey is submitting his final proposal and
budget to CTR in order to initiate the project.
Enclosed for your information is a copy of a
letter published by Dr. Hickey and colleagues in Nature,
246:177-8, November 16, 1973, on the smoking and pregnancy
controversy- Immediately preceding it is another letter on
the sa~e subject by P. R. J. Butch. Both letters vigorously
criticize the propagandizing of Goldstein rela£ive to the
smoking-causality hypothesis.
