PURPOSE: WHETHER OR NOT CIGARETTE SMOKING AND BREATHING CARBON
MONOXIDE (CO) AFFECT CARDIOVASCULAR HEMODYNAMICS WAS EVALUATED IN
ANGINAL PATIENTS,
METHODS: CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION TO MEASURE VARIOUS HEMODYNAMIC
FACTORS WAS PERFORMED TWICE, ONE WEEK APART, ON EIGHT MEN WITH
SEVERE ANIGNA PECTORIS WHO REPORTEDLY SMOKED BETWEEN 20 AND 30
CIGARETTES DAILY,
AFTER CONTROL MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE DURING THE FIRST CARDIAC
CATHETERIZATION, THE SUBJECT SMOKED FOUR-FIFTHS OF THREE STANDARD
BRAND, NONFILTER, HIGH-NICOTINE CIGARETTES AT HIS NORMAL PACE,
INHALING THE SMOKE, MEASUREMENTS HERE TAKEN AT VARIOUS INTERVALS
AFTER SMOKING EACH CIGARETTE,
AFTER CONTROL MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE DURING THE SECOND CARDIAC
CATHETERIZATION, THE PATIENT BREATHED 150 PPM OF CARBON MONOXIDE
FROM A TANK THROUGH A MASK UNTIL THE INCREASE IN CORONARY SINUS C~
WAS SIMILAR TO THAT EXPERIENCED AFTER SMOKING THEIR THIRD CIGARETTE,
LEFT VENTRICULOGRAPHY AICD CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY WERE PERFORMED AFTER
COMPLETIOR OF THE MEASUREMENTS,
FINDINGS: SMOKING HIGH-NICOTINE CIGARETTES ALLEGEDLY CAUSED A
SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN SYSTOLIC AND DIASTOLIC ARTERIAL PRESSURE,
HEART RATE, LEFT VENTRICULAR END-DIASTOLIC PRESSURE, AND CORONARY
