LONG TERM EXPOSURES TO "HIGH" CONCENTRATIONS OF CARBON MONOXIDE
(C0) IN SEVERALSPECIES OF ANIMALS. THE FIRST PART (~0628) OF
THIS STUDY EXAMINED THE HEMATOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF C0.
~ETHOb.%: HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS WERE PERFORMED ON 68 RATS, 40
MICE, 2 BABOONS, 4 RHESUS MONKEYS, AND BEAGLE DOGS, EXPOSED TO 460
MG/M3 CO FOR 71 DAYS FOLLOWED BY 575 MG/M3 CO FOR 97 DAYS, AUTOP-
SIES WERE PERFORMED ON MOST ANIMALS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING LAST
EXPOSUREJ SEVERAL ANIMALS WERE HELD FOR ~ MONTHS FOR REVERSIBILITY
STUDIES,
FINDINGs: HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES HERE CONFINED TO RATS AND CON-
SISTED OF AN INCREASE IN HEART AND SPLEEN WEIGHTS, HO ANATOMIC
CHANGES HERE FOUND IN ANY OTHER SPECIES, THE ONLY MICROSCOPIC
LESIONS FOUND WERE PULMONARY AND GASTROINTESTINAL EDEMA AND
HEMORRHAGE IN TWO RATS WITH POSSIBLE CIRCULJ~TORY FAILURE,
THE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO EXPOSURE IN ALL SPECIES WAS DEPRESSION
OF ACTIVITY, BUT WITHIN A WEEK THE ANIMALS "APPEARED RELATIVELY
NORMAL,"

SMALL GRANULOMATA WITHIN THE LUNG OCCASIONALLY CONTAINING THE
DEBRIS OF A DEAD NEMATODE LARVA AND ALSO AREAS OF CHRONIC PERI-
BRONCHITIS AND AREAS OF CHRONIC INTERSTITIAL PNEUMONITIS," THE
SECOND DISEASE WAS SEVERE ORCHITIS,
