STUDY WAS PROMPTED BY THE POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AIR POLLU-
TION AND THE GREAT NUMBER OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN URBAN YUGOSLAVIA.,
AIR CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) AND NITROGEN OXIDES LEVELS HERI~
MEASURED AT FIVE SELECTED CROSSROADS OF BELGRADEj YUGOSLAVIAJ AND
AIR C0 WAS MEASURED INSIDE THE CABIN OF A MOTOR VEHICLE AS IT
JOURNEYED FROM THE SUBURBS INTO BELGRADE~ YUGOSLAVIA, BLOOD C0 AND
METHEMOGLOBIN WERE MEASURED IN NONSMOKING AND SMOKING TRAFFIC
POLICEMEN AND IN A GROUP OF TEN BUS DRIVERS,
AIR POLLUTION LEVELS AT THE SELECTED CROSSROADS WERE EX-
TREMELY HIGH, AT C0 CONCENTRATIONS OF 30-40 MG/M3s BLOOD CARBON
MONOXIDE LEVELS WERE 3,8-6.2~ FOR NONSMOKERS, AND 5.6-8,2% FOR
SMOKERS$ METHEMOGLOBIN RANGED FROM 1,9 TO 2,7~, WITHIN THE CABIN
OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE HONITORED~ AIR INCREASED SLOWLY AS IT APPROACH-
ED THE CITYj AND FINALLY EXCEEDED "EVEN THE MAXIMUM ALLOWED VALUES
FOR WORKING CONDITIONS IN THE MORE AND MOST BUSY STREETS IN BELGRADEJ"
THE BLooD CARBON MONOXIDE AND METHEMOGLOBIN LEVELS "SH~aED A SIMILAR
INCREASE" IN THE BUS DRIVERS,
DISCUSSION~ m,,,[P]OLLUTANTS ORIGINATING FROM MOTOR VEHICLES MIGHT
HAVE A FAR GREATER IMPACT ON TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS THAN GENERALLY
ASSUMEDs PARTICULARLY THROUGH THE INFLUENCE ON THE PSYCHOPHYSICAL
