DETERMINATIONS WERE MADE oN CIGARETTE AND BIDI SMOKE SAMPLES DRAWN
AT A "LOW" AND A "HIGH" ASPIRATING PRESSURE, AND ON SMOKE FROM THE
FIRST AND SECOND HALVES OF THE CIGARETTES,
FINDINGS: CARBON MONOXIDE CONTENT OF SMOKE FROM THE FIRST HALF OF
THE CIGARETTE WAS FOUND TO BE LESS THAN THAT FROM THE SECOND HALF~
AND GREATER HHEN COLLECTED AT A "HIGH" ASPIRATING PRESSURE THAN AT
A "LOW" PRESSURE, EFFECTS OF PRESSURE DIFFERENCES WERE MORE PRO-
NO~NCED IN BIDIS WHICH MAY BE DUE TO THEIR SMALLER DIAMETER RE-
SULTING IN HIGHER RATES OF AIR FLOW THROUGH THE BURNING ZONE,

SECOND HALF OF THE CIGARETTE WHICH HAS BEEN BROUGHT ABOUT BY COKE
FORMATION, THIS MAY BE AVIODED BY LOOSE PACKING OF TOBACCO AT THE
CORE, HENCE~ IT MAY BE WORTHWHILE TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER TOBACCO
PACKING IN THE CIGARETTE COULD BE MODIFIEDs SO THAT THE DENSITY OF
THE PACKED TOBACCO DECREASES UN|FORMALLY FROM THE PERIPHERY TO THE
CORE THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH OF THE CIGARETTE, THIS MAY PROMOTE
BETTER COMBUSTION AT THE CORE SO THAT CARBONMONDXIDE CONTENT IN
THE SHOKE WILL BE REDUCED,"
