A grant of $80,000 was given to Dr. Domingo Aviado
during 1980. The details of this grant were described in a
letter dated January 30, 1980, a copy of which is attached. We
are now recommending that Dr. Aviado be given support for a
second year at a total amount of $92,000.
;' i~ ~' During 1980, Dr. Avlado formed his own consulting
o~g~lzatlon n~ed A~ospherlc ~ealth Sciences, Inc. He devoted
~i:~..approximately 150 days of the working year to projects related to
~;~;::';.~';/;;;smoki~g. ;~.~. ~. and health. His projects" lncluded' an ongoing review of
s~oki~g and health literature, preparation of reco~endations re
~:~;~:~9%~:"~:~;;-~, zeseEch pro]ects, several site VlSltS to research lnstltutlons
a~d ~e preparation of materials relating to our work on various
smoking a~d health related matte£s. Without question, Dr. Aviado's
efforts were of l~ense benefit to ~s.
.... Bill Shinn and I have reviewed Dr. Aviado's project for
~e year 1980 and feel that renewed support is warranted in the
~ount of $85,000 together with a $7,000 allo~ent for expenses.
As before, we plan to review the progress of the project at the
end of the year to dete~ine whether a similar arrangement should
be made for 1982.
