Re: Gerhard N. Schrauzer
Gentlemen: • - ~ ~
Gerhard N. Sehrauzer, Ph.D., is a professor of Chemistry at
the University of California, San Diego. He has been working for
years in the intradisciplinary field of Bio-Inorganic Chemistry. He
been a consultant for the industry for several years and submitted a
statement at the time of the Jones hearings on public smoking in.
September, 1978. . ..~
Dr. Schrauzer's areas of research interest include selenium, a
trace element in tobacco. Selenium has been shown to possess anti-
carcinogenic properties in certain animar model systems. He is currently
interested in determining the selenium concentration in tobacco products,
whether selenium is present in tobacco smoke, and, if so, the nature of
the selenium. He has submitted a proposal requesting funding for this
research in the amount of $20,000 for a two-year study. ~. ..: .,.. ~ .. ~
" I have discussed this matter with Pat Sirridge and Bill
Gardner, and they believe that we should support Dr. Schrauzer in the
amount requested. Accordingly, I recommend that we make the $20,000
available.
Sincerely,
Timothy M. Finnegan
