SUBJECT: PROPOSALS FOR INDUSTRY FUNDING
I have reviewed the proposals for industry funding of scientific w~rk and
find no "scientific" objections to any of them.
Dr. Vernon Riley's study on stress appear the premiere technical project
at this time. Discussions with George Stungis confirm that the quality
of the effort conveyed in the proposal is supported by onslght visits to
Pacific Northwest Research Foundation.
The importance of the proposals by Dr. Rickey at the Wharton School and
Dr. Sterling are recognizable. It would be most interesting to follow
the successes of Dr. Pdckey in demonstrating the validity of the hormesls
theory and its application to nicotine.
Cardiovascular response to cigarette smoke under investigation by
Dr. J. Roberts, University of Pennsylvania, is interesting; particularly
his early findings that adaptation to chronic exposure may result in
reducing previously cited smoking affects are important to follow. The
L.S.U. study does not seem to be very exciting but results obtained as
the work progresses may make it more so. The credentlal8 of Drs. Nancy
Mello and Jack Mendelson are indeed impressive.
