Statistical Investigation of Smokin~ and Cancer of the
Ltmg" in t~e ~rch 15, 1959 issue of the Proceedings of
the Staff Meetings of the M~yo Clinic. }~e pointed out
that
"the question of the cause of ~aacer is
basically a biologic, not a statistical
problem • • ~.-
In J~d.y, 1959 the report of the British Empire
Cancer Campaign for 1958 contained the statement:
"Experiments over the ~ast five
to induce lung cancer in mice and rats by
exposure to stron~ concentrations of
cigarette s~ke provided "a strlki~
negative reset"."
&~argeon General Burney stated the position of
the U.8. Public Health Service In an article entitled
"Smoking and L~mg Cancer" in the Novembez 28, 195~ issue
of t~e ~ournal of the A.M.Ao He state~ that
"The weight of evidence at present implicates
smokin~ as the principal etiological factor
in the increased incidence of lung cancer."
The editor of the Journal of the A.M.A. commented
on Burney's article in the December 12, 1959 issue saylr~
"Neith~r the pro~cn~nts nor the opponents of
the amokir4 ~h~ry ~ve ~ficieat evid~ce
to ~r~nt tae ass~ptlon of an ~l~r-~ne
aut~rita~Ive ~sit~n".
In a letter to Editor publishe~ in the Februax, y
27, 1960 Berk~cn stated that the Burney article
"is characterized by an imprecision of language
and thought that renders inaccurate almost
every important point it deals with."
