Matters ArisinG From Previous Minutes
a) Diaznrnonium Phosphate
ACTION
Dr. Felton asked that the minute of the previous
meeting be amended to read that the patent position
relating to the use of this material in P.C.L. was not
yet fully clear.
b) Flavour Manufacture

Mr. Short reported that a small group had been set up
to initiate consumer research in the flavour field. This
group will be meeting in the week beginning October
10th to formalate research proposals. ..- PLS
GLADSTONE Case History - BRAHMS
A number of comments on the case history document
have been received and these wLll be circulated to the
members of the M. P. D.C. FH
d) Natural Menthol
Mr~ Walmisley assured the meeting that the threatened
reduction in long-term availability of natural menihol .....
had diminished but that B. & W. would continue to
experiment with synthetic alternatives in order to
safeguard their position.

Dr. Felton reported that an opportunity had not yet
arisen for his discussion with Philip Morris on the
effects of silica gel filters on cigarette smoke.
However, he will continue to seek out a suitable
opportunity for this discussion.
f) Rothmans SL
Mr. "Short reviewed the progress of Rothmans SL in
Europe and it was confirmed that R. & D. have
acquired samples from a number of important
markets for examination. As yet no significant
technical break-through has come to light in the
course of tb.£s examination.
g) Compensation
A number of discussions have taken place on the
subject of compensation and cigarette design, and
proposals have been put forward for
A progressive reduction in the delivery
of tar and nicotine, aimed at selected
segments of the smoking population.
A progressive reduction in tar while the
delivery of nicotine is kept constant, aimed
at nicotine-dependent smokers.
Cigarettes which have the same smoking
machine delivery but different deliveries
to the compensating smoker, achieved by
developing cigarettes with knowledge of
the smoker's responses to such factors
as pressure drop, ventilation, irritation,
impact, etc.
Further action will be decided at the next
meeting.
h) Marketing/R. & D. Interaction
The meeting agreed that the objective for this
Conference was "to improve the un~de.rstanding and
working relatio%6__b.~t~ween R.~_~.D. and Marketing '.
Mr. Short tabled a draft programme for discussion
