~S FROM CORESTA'S ETS SUB-GROUP MEETING
Vienna, Austria
September 15, 1995

The ETS Sub-Group held a half-day meeting on September 15, 1995 in Vienna, Austria at
the Tobacco Land offices of Austria Tabak. The meeting was kindly hosted by Dr. Hubert
Klus. Twenty-one members from 14 different companies were present.
SUB-GROUP BUSINESS
Dr. Michael Ogden informed those present that CORESTA's Scientific Commission
had approved the designation change of this group from a task force to a sub-group.
Additionally, Dr. Ogden confirmed that his nomination to be the new coordinator of
the sub-group was also approved. He told the members that Dr. Charles Green, the
former coordinator, had volunteered to be secretary to the group. There was no
opposition to this proposal.
Dr. Ogden reviewed the plans for the collaborative studio to further qualify several
environmental tobacco smoke analytical chemistry methodologies. These include
methods for nicotine, 3-ethenylpyridine, gravimetric RSP, UVPM, FPM, and
solanesol. Copies of the most recent analytical method protocol for the particulate
measurements were circulated to members present. This protocol was written by Dr.
Ogden and his colleagues for ASTM. Any members, not present at the Vienna sub-
group meeting and desiring a copy, should contact Dr. Ogden.
Dr. Ogden presented a summary table indicating laboratories that have agreed to
participate in the collaborative study and specifically, what analysis they were prepared
to run. A copy of this table is attached. In total, 15 laboratories will participate in the
test. Next steps (with proposed target dates) are the following: Collaborative study
committee (M. Ogden, B. Frost, J.-J. Piad6) will finalize methods to be tested and the
study protocol and distribute to participants (December, 1995); practice analysis will
continue until all labs verifi/ successful implementation of the methods and any

methodological issues that may arise are settled; samples for the collaborative study
will be generated and distributed (March, 1996); samples will be analyzed and results
transmitted to M. Ogden (April, 1996); preliminary study results will be presented at
the next sub-group meeting (May, 1996).
The second major item of subgroup business was the proposal to conduct a world-
wide survey of indoor air quality in restaurants. The purpose of this work is the
following:
Evaluations of indoor airquality are planned for restaurants where
smoldng is permitted These evaluations are being done in order to
provide scientific and technical information on the relationships among
four variables: ventilation and filtration ~ystema; occupant perception,
smoldng rates, and concentrations of indicators of indoor air quality and
environmental tobacco smoke.
Mr. Hoy Bohanon distributed a dratt protocol prepared by himsdt~ Nigel Warren,
Helmut Rei£ and Masao Matsukura for conducting these restaurant studies. The dralt
protocol contains a section with a questionnaire for measuring occupant perceptio~
All members were invited to comment on the questionnaire and to provide samples of
any questionnaires that they have used in the past.
The next steps will be:
Finalize questionnaire: November 1995
lrmalize protocol and list of paaidpants: December 1995
Preliminary schedule for test activity: January 1996
Actual testing: February - April 1996
Compile preliminary results for discussion at task force meeting: May 1996
Data analysis: 'July 1996
Final report: September 1996
Presentation of final report to CORESTA: November 1996,.
Discussions were held concerning the time and place of the next full meeting of the
sub-group. Dr. Ogden recommended that a meeting be held in the spring .of 1996
possa"oly in Milan, Italy. He is taking responsibility for arrangements and will notify
sub-group members in due comm.
Since the meeting was scheduled for only one-half day, there was no technical program
planned.
Respectfully submitted,
Charles R. Green, Secretary
