Charles & Green, Ph.D. Prhlcipal Scientist Research & Developraent P.O. Box 1487 Winston-Salera. NC 27102-1487 Telephone: 910-741-4979 Fax: 910- 741-0719 May 5, 1995 MINUTES FROM CORESTA'S ETS SUB-GROUP MEETING Neuch~,tel, Switzerland April 26, 27 Attendees: Helmut Reif, Michael Intorp, l-firu-ich Elmerflaorst, Oskar StuN, Keith Philfips, Barrio Frost, Nigel Warren, David Tucker, Mike Ogden, Stephen Sears, Hoy Bohanon, Anders DaNgren, L-Jacques Piad6, Ted Sanders, Gerhard Soberer, Charles Green, Lutz Mfitler, Jean H~e, Joaquin Sarabia, Masao Matsuloara, T. Shibayaha, and Moon Soo Khee SUB-GROUP BUSINESS • Dr. Charles Green announced that, as of this meeting, he was stepping down as convertor for this group. He recommended that Dr. Michael Ogden be named new convenor. This recommendation was supported unanimously by attending task force members. The Scientific Commission has been requested to cortfirm Dr. Ogden's appointment. * After reviewing the Scientific Commission's definitions for task force and sub-group, it is our belief that the ETS Task Force should rightly be deemed the ETS Sub-Group. The Scientific Commission has been requested to confirm this name change. • In an effort to hasten progress, the ETS Sub-Group desires to hold a 1/2 day session during the Vienna Meeting of the Smoke & Technology Groups. The secretz.~-y of the Smoke Group, Maria Elmano Rocha, has been requested to m&e appropriate arrangements. • The ETS Sub-Group will conduct a collaborative study of the ETS methods for gravimetric RSP, LY~PM, FPM, solanesol, nicotine and 3-ethenylpyridine. Fourteen laboratories will participate. Dr. Ogden leads a group consisting of Battle Frost, and L-J. Piadd to organize the study. * The ETS Sub-Group agreed to take on the task &ventilation as a subject for cooperative work. The opinion was that the experience and techrtieal specialties in our existing group made it the logical home for this work and not a new task force. Our initial project is to conduct a world-wide survey of existing conditions of ventilation in workplace and hospitality locations. The premise being that more Draconian ventilation praczices under consideration by some standard setting bodies will not solve IAQ problems. What is needed is compliance xvith existing regulations. The proposed survey is expected to show that current ventilation practices do not meet existing standards. The first step in our work is to develop a standard protocol :hat can be used world-wide to evaluate ventilation. A group chaired by H. Bohanon and inc!uding N. Warren, M. Matsukura, and [over]

H. Reif is charged with this task. The Scientific Commission has been informed of this decision. TECHNICAL PROGRAM The technical program for this meeting was exceptionally good. A summary of topics and speakers is the following: Report On 6-City European ETS Study - Dr. Keith Phillips (I-tazleton Laboratories); Report On VOC Analysis For The European Study - B. Frost; Automation Of Gravimetric RSF Determination - M. Ogden; Methodological Note: Determination of Solanesol In ETS - G. Scherer; Urinary, Mutagenicity In Nonsmokers Exposed To Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) Under Real-Life Conditions - G. Soberer; Improvements To Indoor Air Quality Through Ventilation And Filtration - N. Warren; Restaurant Indoor Air Quality: A Case Study, The Dub~iner - H. Bohanon; Report On ASHRAE Activities - H. Bohanon; Discussion On Possible Ventilation Studies - H. Reif, and A Report on Model ETS Absorption/Desorption Studies - J.-J. Piad(~. Each of the speakers is commended for his contribution to the program. Because of the high interest in the topic of ventilation and encouragement from CORESTA's Board to establish a program in this area, the presentation by Dr. Helmut Reif was particularly significant. A copy of his overheads is included as an attachment to these minutes. The prevailing opinion at the meeting was that many of the ideas listed by Dr. Reif's group are important and ought to be pursued, but it was difficult to understand how they might be done as a Sub-Group activity. Individual companies are encouraged to take on these projects. The presentation on determination of ETS solanesol raised some questions concerning the storage of samples prior to analysis. Mike Ogden and Barrio Frost agreed to investigate this question and make a report to the Sub-Group at a future meeting. SPECIAL YI-r_ANKS The Sub-Group members are very appreciative of the arrangements made for the meeting by Dr. Helmut Reif and his secretary Ms. Jill Gygax. The facilities were excellent. We also express our thanks to Philip Morris Europe for hosting a dixm, er on April 26th. Now Helmut, if you couId only do something about the weather. Respectfully submitted Charles R. Green, Convenor Attachmer, t
