WELCOME Welcome from the 1998 CORESTA Congress Organizing Committee THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE is comprised of: Richard Baker, Catherine Binns, Beverly Hanford, Sara Knell, Pam Roberts, Steve Stotesbury, and Tony Wicks On behalf of British American Tobacco it is a per- sonal honor and pleasure for the Organizing Committee to welcome all participants to the 1998 CORESTA Congress. We are delighted to wel- come such a distinguished group of international to- bacco scientists to Brighton. The tobacco industry is faced with a variety of chal- lenges and attacks worldwide, many of which stem from a lack of information, or a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of science. The theme of Ibis Con- gress -- "Progress through Research" -- reflects the need to work together on basic science and to commu- nicate the research findings to the world. lu addition, for the first time, information on the Congress has been available on the lntemet. The site has been posted for about a year and has been updated as plans develop. The website is http://www.corest~.com. We hope that your stay in Brighton will be fruitful in the interchange of scientific and technical knowl- edge that v-ill develop oew avenues of research. We have arranged a program that should be scientifically rewarding and socially enjoyable. Wc wish you a hap- py stay in Brighton, sometimes called "London by the sea," but having a uniqueness all of its own. 2 1998 Coresta Congress Welcome to All MEMBERS OF THE CORESTA COBIGRESS l-t is a pleasure to welcome all participants to the 1998 CORESIA Congress. We have been meeting together for more than fear decades to exchange scientific ideas and develop research programs in a wide variety of disciplines. This year's theme -- "Progress through Research" -- is of particular significance to all of us ~'ho sup- port CORESTA and its misslnn. Even though the coming years will provide for the tobacco world cballenges and opportunities, by continuing to focus on tire many areas io which CORE.qTA has devel- oped an outstanding rect~rd of expertise and excel- lence, I am certain COREP, TA will be able to make stiff greater ctmlributkms to understanding tobacco and tobacco products. The bye years since our laM CORESTA Congress have been busy years. I am happy to report that our efforts have been very fruitful, and we should all be proud of our accomplishments. We have focused on ways Io strengthen our internal organizatinn to en- sure that the future of CORESTA remains solid. We have reviewed our slructure and have expanded the terms of reference assigned to the Scientific Cmnmis- sion (SC). With the direct involvement of the SC, the Board has also defined new areas of interest that are more appropriate and relevant to today's world. The SC BY MANUEL C. BOURLAS Acting President of the Coresta Board has done a marveloos tab in turning ideas and rec- ommendations intu substantive programs -- a job well done. lhe existing and new ~[ask Forces are meeting the challenge. Our programs are moving forward, and judging from the technical program of the Congress, impressive progress is being made in all nf CORESTA's areas. For those nf us who are nearing the end of a e.'underful career in the tobacco industry, we had another thought: To leave behind a strong and viable team, a team with a vision toward the future. We are con(ident that we bare accum- plished this objective in CORESTA The common thread that brings CORESrA togeth- er is our Im.'e nf science and technology, and a keen interest in advancing our knowledge. By working to- gether, supporting each other and CORES'[A's goals, we haee an opportuoity to move CORESTA into the twenty-first century, and maintain our status as the scieotific pool for the industry. 1998 Coresta Congress 3

Brighton is also home to the exofic Ro> al Pavilion, built in 1822. Most of its at- tractions are within walking distance of one another. The charming city has something for everwme. There is ch~ema, music, come,]), dance, and drama of all kinds in more than 30 different venues. It is a fun place to shop, witl~ sharps of e~ er~ kind. It i~ also possi- ble 1o eat out in Brighton every night of the year and never go In lhe same restaurant Iwicv. All of the popu- la~ food specialties are represented Chinese, ]ndian, Italian, Lebanese, even Tex-Mex ~ among Brighlon's 400 caf6s and restauran[s. The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery has collections of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and the ciIy has many small studios, galleries, and workshops, showing [he work of I~al and international artists. city also has a large number of onique and curiosily shops concentraIed within one area k~own as Fhe Lanes. lts narrow paved streets are definitely worth ex- ploring, foil of shops selling antiques, [ewelry, hats, de- 998 Coresla Congress signer clolhes, and more. The seafront is especially popular. One can stroll along the beachfront or have a drink in one ot the many caf6s and watch local artists craft original works of art. On the Palace Pier, visitors enjoy a taste of traditional and modem seaside fun or simply admire the elegant Regency sqoares and terraces tbat align the seafront promenade. H.],.. tory as COLORFUL AS ITS COMMUNITY The fishing commnnity Brislelmestm~e I~as existed since before Roman times in what is now Brighlon. William the Conqueror ~as oue of the first recorded visilo~s ~hcn hi~ arm~ in~ advd England to]lu~ing the nearby Baffle of Hastings in 1066. Over the next five centuries the people went abont their bosiness in rela- tive peace ~ until 1~14, when the town was attacked by the French fleet and burnt tu the ground. But by the seventeenth century, Brightnn was the largest town in the county o[ Sussex. In the eighteenth century, a doclor recommended bathing in the ~'a as got~ for health, and the town began to develop as a r~rt. From 1783 onward, lhe PrhKe of Wake, later N'coming the P6n~ Regent and then King C~rge IV, ~ame a regular visitor ~o Brighton and lhe town became fashionable. Many Regency-style houses and ~]uar~ were built belw~ 18~ and 18~}. ~e Royal Pax ilion, desi@wd in Indian style, was constructed as a royal palace in 1822. The large hotels started 1o fi om tbe mid nineteenth cenhu') on. Brighton is one of Britain's key conference centers. 1 arge polibcal conferences are often held at the Grand Hotel. During a lq84 conference of the British Cooserv- ative Party at the Grand Hotel, a terrndst bomb exph~- ed in lhe early hours of the morning, killing five people and seriously injuring 30. Most of the British guvern- merit was in the hotel at the time, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher narrowly escaped injury. Lastly, Brightoo has a rich literary tradition. At least four major novels are set here. These include lane Austeo's PrMe and Prdudice (1813~, Charles Dickens' DombcII and Son (1846), W. M. Thackeray's Vanity Fair (1847), and Graham Greene's BriRhto~ Rock (1938). 1998 Coresta Congress 9
