MINUTES OF CORESTA'S ETS SUB GROUP MEETING
Geneva, Switzerland
April 18, 2000
Attendees:
Takuya Asai, Hoy Bohanon, Dan Hock, Mat~thias Morgenstern, Michael Ogden, Jean-
Jacques Piad6, Stephen Purkis, Helmut Reif, Gerhard Seherer, Matthias Schorp, Helen
Taylor
Introduction - M. OGDEN welcomed participants to the meeting and thanked Philip Morris Europe
for their hospitality in hosting the meeting. The 10 Sub Group members present signed the
attendance list and received the agenda.
o
Collaborative Study Progress - The Draft Report (CORESTA Environmental Tobacco Smoke
Analysis Collaborative Study Program), which had been circulated by email to attendees and
collaborators in advance of the meeting, was presented and discussed. The members present voted
unanimously to accept the report with the provisos that (a) certain editorial changes agreed upon at
the meeting are incorporated and (b) that no substantive issues are raised by the individual
collaborators in their review. Once comments from collaborators have been received, the Final
Report will be prepared and submitted to CORESTA's Scientific Commission for approval. Next
steps on this project are as follows: (l) finalize report to CORESTA; (2) prepare manuscript(s) for
peer-reviewed publication in J. AOAC Int.; and (3) draft methods into appropriate format for
submission to ISO. M. OGDEN will take the lead on all three of these next steps. Regarding this last
item, it was requested that the current status of the various ETS methods be summarized in the
minutes.
Nicotine - Based on earlier CORESTA work, a method for nicotine in ETS exists as CORESTA
Recommended Method No. 14 and as ISO 11454. These methods will become obsolete when
replaced by the combined method fbr nicotine and 3-ethenylpyridine. The ISO proposal introducing
this method as a New Work Item Proposal (ISO[I'C 126 N 636; Environmental tobacco smoke -
Nicotine and 3-Ethenylpyridine in vapor phase) has been approved.
Solanesol -The ISO proposal introducing this method as a New Work Item Proposal (ISO/TC 126 N
635; Environmental tobacco smoke - Respirable suspended particles based on solanesoi) has been
approved.
RSP/UVPM/FPM - This method, which has been in the ISO process for some time, has now been
approved as a Draft International Standard (ISO/DIS 15593; Environmental tobacco smoke-
Estimation of its contribution to respirable suspended particles - Ultraviolet absorbance and
fluorescent particulate matter methods).

3. Restaurant Survey Progress - The CORESTA Final Report "Survey of Indoor Air Quality,
Ventilation, and Smoking Activity in Restaurants", which was previously approved and submitted to
CORESTA, was reviewed and discussed with particular emphasis on the pending manuscript in
preparation for submission to a peer-reviewed joumal. M. SCHOR_P, J.-J. PIADE, and H.
BOHANON are taking the lead on preparing this manuscript. The manuscript will acknowledge that
the work was coordinated under the auspices of CORESTA and, thus, will require approval by the
Scientific Commission and the Board prior to publication. Further, because of the volume of data
generated on this project and the large number of individuals and companies involved, it is
envisioned that only the persons actively involved in preparing the final manuscript will be
listed on
the manuscript as authors (with acknowledgment of those participants who provided data). Proposed
next steps in manuscript preparation are: (1) draf~ manuscript prepared and reviewed by principal
authors-June 13; (2) draf~ manuscript to ETS Sub Group for comment- June 30; (3) comments
from ETS Sub Group due - July 21; (4) final document to M. OGDEN for CORESTA (Scientific
Commission and Board) approval - September 1.
4. Guide for Measuring ETS -Next steps in preparing the "Guide" to sampling ETS were discussed.
M. OGDEN discussed efforts within ASTM to prepare a similar/parallel guide and presented a drat~
guide outline for discussion. While much interesting discussion ensued, there were no immediate
action items clarified for next steps. M. OGDEN will continue efforts within ASTM on preparing a
guide and will keep the Sub Group informed. The task of preparing such a guide is mostly in
writing
(and not experimentation) and it is envisioned that such a task will be difficult to manage
effectively
within the Sub Group. It is hoped that specific subject areas will emerge from discussing the
guide
that could spark future Sub Group collaborative research activities.
New Business - Potential research areas for future work were discussed. One area, differentiating
between ETS and sidestream smoke, sparked considerable discussion. Potential research activities in
this area were discussed and were thought to be of sufficient timeliness and interest to warrant
further
consideration. Sub Group members are asked to consider this topic in more detail for additional
discussions at our next meeting.
Next Meeting - An attempt will be made to schedule a short (-1/2-day) Sub Group meeting in
Lisbon, Portugal in conjunction with the CORESTA Congress (October 15-20, 2000). If it can be
arranged, exact time and place of the meeting will be announced in advance of the Congress.
Respectfu lly submitted,
Michael W. Ogden, Convenor
