DIPL:ING. ERHARD ~ITTE~SHAUS B A T Gi~A~Erv=.N-~B~iKEN GMBH Dr. L.C.F. Blac~ Esq., Group Research & ~velopment Centre, British-American Tobacco Co. Ltd., Regent's Park Road, GB - Southampton S09 IPE. 23rd November, 1979 I~AT~ 26 NOV 1979 Dear Lionel, i 2:'~" I refer to our discussion on Thursday mor~~ the Ist of November during our London Conference, where you asked me again for our medium and long term needs. On various discourses with our R&D staff on the GR&DC programme before and after the Conference there have raised quite a lot o~ actlvit~es which we did not find adequately taken into account within the 1980 progra~e of Southampton. So we deliver our needs to you, especially as you know that because of our increasing competitive market the anti-smoking campaigns, entailing more and more legal constraints and regulations coerce us to con- centrate on short-term problems such as appropriate and prospective product development and to meet the requirements of growing product quality assurance. Our needs which you find enclosed are supposed to reveal the possible demands and issues for our company in the future~ May be, we have to face these problems much sooner than we expect. There is no question that our needs reflect our problems and we are responsible for their results and evaluation now and in the future. BATCo document for Mayo Clinic 17 June 2002

- 2 - So I would appreciate very much if you could tell me, how you intend to integrate them into the GR&DC programme. Perhaps you might like to outline the scope of planning and possible ways of solutions together with realistic time estimation. As you know, I am in charge of R & D and obliged to my Board for all R & D projects and future planning which have b~en agreed upon by the Board, so that you/ways of tackling our needs with regard to possible achievements are of great value to me. I am convinced that by continuing our dialogue and the fruitful bringing together of our research and development staff the cooperation of R & D departments will he strong and useful for both of us. Looking forward to meetlhg you on the 28th of November, I remain, Encls. CC. Mr. Stewart Lockhart Mr. Prltchard Herr v. Specht Mr. Tice With kind re~ards, Yours sin er ly, O t~ ~D BATCo document for Mayo Clinic 17 June 2002
