REPORT, NO RD 1~52
Ftlltn9 ,Value of'~Tobacco and Firmness of Ct9arettes:
~h~ Effect of th~ Cigarette Haken
The Group research programme on the phystcal properties of
tobacco includes studies on the influence of mechanical stress
on the properties of cut tobacco.
W$thtn these studies, work ts planned to establish principles
relevant to the opttmisatlon of the cigarette making process.
This wtll not involve the redesign of commercial cigarette
maktng machines, but will concentrate on the process setttngs
of typical making machines and their effect on the final physical
properties of the tobacco.
Account wt|1 be taken of the type of tobacco blend and the
primary processing conditions.
The work reported here ts a preliminary step towards the objective.
The principal conclusions from work on the maktng machtnes are
that there is only a small decrease in filltng value of tobacco
as it passes through the hopper, but that a larger change occurs
in the garnlture.
