During the last twelve years many scud£es have shown Chic • de~Lcimzcy in the blood serum levml of the enzyme al-antitrypslu is s~rongly associated with the occurrence of e~physmma, and ~t is this deficiency which is inherited. The genetic transmissiou of al-antitrypsin deficiency Ls more complex than simple Mendelian genetics, and results in a range of observed levels and types of al-anCitrypsin, which d~ffez in different ethnic &~oups.
