Dear Dr. Osdene:
Noting the date, I would first like to
congratulate you on your 42nd birthday.
A1l' the best to you.
Please find attached our data on the multa-
genicity of the smoke condensates A and B,
and their fractions. Except for the muta-
:,genicity of the basic fraction in TA 98
and TA 1538 with the S-9 liver fraction of
rats pre-treated with 3-methylcholanthrene,
we cannot find any differences in the acti-
-:vation of tars A and B(°tars° were those
'you sent us for the mouse skin bioassay).
At this time we cannot assure you that the
two differences are real or based oin weak-
nesses in our separation scheme or aging
of the "tars". -We may repeat the test for
these two examples with tar freshly genera-
ted at AHF from the two cigarettes. Please
let us know.your thoughts on this.
One finding which we wil] reevaluate in due
time, concerns the relatively high mutagenic
activity of who1e smoke condensate of ciga-
rette B at 25 ug/plate i!n TA 1538 with the S-9
0
.fraction of rat liverhomogenate induced by ~
3-methylcholanthrene. rA

Currently, we are testing the "tars" olf the
14C-labelled cigarettes and the fractions
for mutagenicity. ;
