Dr. Tucker mentions in phone call that the research method in the science paper by Waddel and Marlowe has been able to demonstrate complete inhibition of lung tumor formation in mice treated with NNN and pretreated with an alcohol. Furhter details of phone call are provided.

Telephone Conversation with Dr. Ann Tucker - Inhibition of NNN Binding
~ ' Dr.:,Ann Tucker is an immunotoxicologist who was formerly at MCV and is
currently with NIEHS. Ann called to inquire if I was familiar with'the
l.~°recent Science paper by Waddell and MarTowelon inhibition by alcohols of
~.' nitrosonornicotiine (NNN) binding. Accord'ing to Ann, Waddell has been
~:°x able to demonstrate complete inhibition of lung tumor formation in
t_ mice treated'with NNN and pretreated with anialcohol (? ethanol, ni-butanol
~, :'.9lor t-butanol). She said that Waddell has devised a new method of administering1
the alcohol that he believes is patentable. Ann also said that Waddell is -~
"--,meeting with the president of Brown and' Williamson Tobacco Company July 14, 1983
*, y;:to discuss his ideas and administration method. When I tried to get more
information regarding details she was reluctant to discuss it further and '-"
suggested we contact Dr. Waddell directly. (Dr. Waddell was Ann's adviser
: in graduate school. ) ~~ ~ . . . .
-You will recall that we discussed Waddell"s research proposal on NNN binding
and the wiisdom of this research approach was questioned. My concern is
that i f you i nhibi t NNN bi nding at one s i te, wi 11, i ncreased bi ndi ng occur
